Potential Causes of Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD):

The following is a list of potential causes for TMD or pain in the jaw. Please keep in mind that this list is not all-inclusive. They are, however, the most common causes of TMJ pain or TMD.

TMJ Synovitis (inflammation of the synovial membrane of the TMJ)
Disc Derangement (TMJ articular disc is either in front of, or behind the condyle of the mandible)
Hypermobile (too much movement within the joint)
Hypomobile (too little movement within the joint)
Bruxism (grinding the teeth)
Muscle Spasms in jaw muscles
Trauma (i.e. from Motor Vehicle Accident)
Poorly fitting dentures
Dental conditions
Arthritis (Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc)
Psychosocial stress
Associated dysfunction of cervical spinal segments
